I’ve spent a year in the U.S. where I’ve been working on a wireless anti-poaching system for elephants.  In Africa, thousands of elephants are killed every year because of ivory-trading. Reservations try to protect their animals by using wireless GPS-tracking collars. With these collars, poaching activity can be analyzed, but the real-time reaction is impossible.

In this talk, I will present a wireless, ultra-low-power gunshot detection system that provides real-time alerts in the presence of poaching activity. Combined with the GPS-trackers, the system can transmit immediate alerts with location data included. The main challenge is to develop a robust but sensitive device that lasts for 2 years from a single battery while providing constant listening for gunshots. The technical novelty of the system is a wake-up mechanism which enables under 100μA power consumption in listening mode. Our first prototype is waiting for deployment in Kenya.
